The Concrete Jungle

There is a boy somewhere far away
And I know that no matter what he may say
He can’t escape me
Or erase me
From his grasp
And the asp
Bit me on the neck
Of the dream I thought to wreck
And I wonder when we both might die
Me by accident and you because you want to try
To see what’s beyond the pale
And I know what is not up for sale
But I have no cash to buy
Just the lashes I use to lie
About who I am
I look away and that’s part of the plan
Because I cannot let you see
That you have found your home in me
Because I know that someday we’ll be separated
Whether by force or because we’ve been education
To believe in the divide
And I abide
Somewhere between God and Mass
Between being a good girl and getting an A in class
And it’s something growing up in an Ireland in transition
Where people still use ammunition
To fire at you
While tolerance is preached to you in the pew
And it’s not okay to be gay
Then it is (or at least that’s what they say)
And I think of Stephen Gately
And the people who cannot find a home lately
As the rows erupt
And people on the news say that we’re fucked
But I see another scene
And it resides in all that we’ve been
In all these centuries
And the millennia before they told us who we could be
If we just believed
But the dragon falls and I’m relieved
Of the burden I bear
And I watch the fabric tear
On all that I thought I knew
This land always meant more to me than you
And I know you’re somewhere in the city
And I tried it for a while but it’s a pity
But I missed the hills of Kilglass
And the soul that pours through the grass
In the fields so green
The college was a concrete jungle of all I’d never been
And I found some kind of refuge in Darragh
But my heart is like a sparrow
That sits on a lonely branch and sings
For the boys that gives air to its wings
And the girls fight over what handbag is on brand
And I just stare and watch the sand
Slipping out of our hands
And wonder why they don’t understand
That they’re gripping something that is made of leather
And won’t make them feel any better
And I know I’ve got to get out of there
Then I find Tessa and Jennie and I know that they care
As we find some kind of peace in Nutgrove Avenue
And I drove my own car down the roads of you
As I stay up til five
Exuberant in the knowledge that you’re alive
Somewhere over there on the west coast
And I don’t mean to boast
But I think my man is the best
Because he’s deeper than all the rest
And I cannot contemplate
A series of x’s and y’s that do not equate
To you and I forever
So I sail this endeavour
To it’s logical conclusion
My confession and your confusion

The Fawn

The fawn is always yawning out her insides
I swear you could set your clock by the way that she abides
By the steady midnight tock
Of the stories that she keeps on lock
And I’ve decided to just drop out of her sphere
Because chains, bells and whistles when she is near
And she never listens and she never hears
She is the iceberg as my ship steers
Unto it’s own direction
And it’s as if love is just a selection
That we make
I know you call the boys and girls fake
When they do not measure up
To the talisman of our love
And I keep it held in my heart
But you wouldn’t know if you tear it apart
Just to find out what is there
It’s like asking a brain to care
After a person is dead
What is it that you said
You don’t have time
That might have been a good line
If it had been true
But, man, I just don’t believe you
Not when you’re rocking back and forth
On the chair on our porch
When we’re both eighty two
No Bambi can take me away from you

A Starship Far Away

Somehow there is a starship far away
And it is hidden in every day
In the midst of meals and courses
In the midst of screaming fights, divorces
And I call that love, it’s a futile road
To ever carry that heavy load
They call life
And every wife
Knows the weight
Of hiding in her husbands hate
As he trudges through the snow
Pretending he is in the know
And I’m taking apart an institution
Because it is in my constitution
And I always wanted to be a newly wed
So I could share somebody’s bed
But that dream has faded
And I’m jaded
At thirty three
Like I swore I’d never be
I’d follow every dream to its resolution
But now it seems the only solution
Is to let it go
And rest and know
That every cloud has its silver lining
And I’m one who is undefining
What it means to be woman and grown
I plunge into the unknown
And come out smelling of roses
I didn’t realise that I chose this
Over a life of steady familiarity
Rooted in the ground like a deep tree
So steady in its being
But there’s something else I’m seeing
In the mists of time
It’s you and I and we are fine
Just as we are
Behind every black hole is a hidden star

Sensual Revolution

If I don’t write it now I never will
Why does our skill
In that department go unrewarded
Like an email that remains unforwarded
And we conform to all kinds of stereotype
When we step out of bounds it really isn’t nice
As we’re met with the lashings of society
Come on now, it can’t be just me
Because to be female means meek and compliant
Not subject to feelings that are violent
And rude and loud and unfettered
In an avenue that cannot be bettered
And there is so little discourse so I take to the web
To find out what I’m missing instead
But all this passion in the astral plane
May be in vain
If I cannot make real
All the beauty that I feel
In our encounter as we roll the dice
And I am so much more than nice
When it comes to red and blue
Cold meets warm and me and you
In the winter of my life
I found something beyond the strife
And I may never be a wife
But I’m letting go the night
As the only place to share
I step forward and I dare
To break the silent vow
That we all follow somehow
In case we would betray
Ourselves and what we’ve put away
For safe keeping
But I amn’t sleeping
When I cover the sin
The simple joy of me and him

FOMO

The fear of missing out
Haunts my sideboard
Coz nothing’s enough
I swear on the word
That I utter
Under my breath
I’m on my way
But I’m not there yet
And everything glistens
Like sunny snow
Out of my reach
But don’t you know
It’s closer than it was
And I didn’t break any laws
When I wished you down
I tore the tatters on my gown
Into the shape of a badass queen
What if this is just a dream
That is happening in consciousness
Do you trust
In the powers that be
Is it ok or will we see
What is coming down the line
There was that moment you stopped time
And I was taken by an intake of breath
It’s sharp and I cannot forget
It’s impact on my soul
I keep catching glimpses of being whole

There’s Nothing Love Can’t Do

There’s nothing love can’t do
It somehow brought me to you
And in our chasm call
Though we fight and the wall
Seems to rise between us
Baby, you couldn’t even dream up
This kind of love
And I’m five and the dove
Flies overhead
Warding off the resident dread
To come again another day
Do I just get in your way
Or are we okay
Because I fly
And I know you die
In a room alone
God damn, just look at your phone
And you will find me there
A digital realm of true care
To vanquish the pain
What was lost we can never gain
But an aside
I am alive
And so are you
So there’s really nothing stopping us two

Love And Other Verbs

Toying with the idea of letting Stephen know
But he’s getting close so I’m letting Stephen go
As he tumbles out the words like a cavalcade in my mind
I keep wondering what I left behind
And he’s got a girl and I don’t wanna trespass a sin
I just feel like dancing when I talk with him
And what’s going on is not what it appears
I’m not laying all my life on you, dears
I’m just testing the waters like a foot on the bridge
Coz I’ve always been quintessentially his
And he owns the motions I make through the air
It was just a moment but we both were there
To hold each other’s hand like a temporary greeting
I’m so excited that we’re actually meeting
For the first time again after so long
Is the seat by your side where I belong?

Love and a Fire Sign

Love,
Is at its most powerful
When open doors
Meet it
At every shore
And I've been scared
Of my wild heart
Which pulls me
All apart
When I
Don't know
What I'm doing
Anymore
It makes my spirit soar
And takes my hand
Tells me that it will be grand
In country tones
Or Dublin when he's on the phone
Batting lashes
And I phoenix from the ashes
To blaze anew
A fire sign just for you
And interestingly
You just sigh
Tell me a feigned goodbye
Coz I know
You wanna hear more
And I can count
The numbers that you score
With your perfect tune
And movement when
Nobody's in the room
Could I hold out a hand
Would you catch it
Would you be my man
And let the drifting go
I see you where you are, you know
And love you as you be
There's no monstrosity to see
But pulverised
From all your shaking
You're in the room
My boots are quaking
But I stay
Please tell me you love me that way
In a summertime share
Or an I know that you care
More than you let on
It's not gone
But eternal here
I love you always, my dear

Shanghai

It was a once in a lifetime kind of a thing
And I might have a life but I’ll never have him
And you are a wonder and touch me just so
Where he left the wound that you want to go
I wish I could agree with the please in your eyes
I nod along to the flower that dies
And you give me everything I could entertain
And I know you want to ease my pain
But does that make it right to go along
When you’ve painted the picture and mastered the song
And all I need to do is slip my hand into yours
Stand by your side as you close all the doors
Hope in my heart that it is enough
To hold back the force of his tidal wave love
That wreaked such destruction on all of my plains
I called the cops but they just took names
And now I am stranded in this waste of a place
But someone sees something when they look in my face
And I want to crawl in under your arm
Cause you swore you would never do me that kind of harm
And I know in all honesty you are speaking the truth
And it’s not the first time I have loved you
But the bitterness burns in the back of my throat
As I wonder do I want to stay afloat
Cause the weather may change and the tides may rise
But he will always be God in my eyes
Bitten by a curse I cannot undo
I don’t want to inflict myself upon you
Unsteady heart that roams the seas
And kisses the waves of who I used to be
You are neat and precise and create a home
But I’m desperado and I love it alone
To come and call with flowers to your door
And say that I wish I could give you more
But he already took all that I had
What’s left are the shards and I feel so bad
That the most of what I have to offer
Is to hold your hand and think of how he thinks of her
And you’re worth true love but you don’t let me go
I look in your eyes and I feel that I know
That whatever the winds blow me in time
My feelings for you are not only mine
But surge on repeat to a lunar command
I am your friend and I think we’ll be grand
And fall into step as I catch your breath
I could be yours if you know that I met
Him as he walked blades of grass through the field
And there’s a part of my soul that never will yield
To the onslaught of this universe
I am glad of the way he made me hurt
And if that’s something you can accept
Then maybe I can be who I ought to be yet
Catch the smile to make it spread
He let me go and left me for dead
But clasped in the locket on my chain
Is a blank space waiting for a name
So maybe Poseidan won’t drown me today
I want to say thanks for not going away
