Don’t Lose Your Humanity

Don’t lose your humanity when you grow up
Remember you were founded on love
Like every good city
And there is self pity
And there is blame
But know the name
That is given to you
Is not all there is when they ask what is true
And I put a flower in the shield of the riot policeman
Because I know that only open hearts can
Remind a solider what he really is
Not a function of what it means to merely exist
As a job or as a duty
There is beauty
Within every man
No matter what he can
Entertain
When he seeks salvation in vain
In the trigger of the gun
And the false notion that he is the only one
Who feels this way
But everything will eventually pass away
But do you realise what is eternal in the now
And if you do then what will you allow
To happen on your watch
Do you keep one eye on the clock
As you hear it tick your life away
And you gather sand because you cannot stay
In an earthen grain
And is it wrong that I see the pain
In their mocking eyes
As they disguise
Their despair
At having to go in there
And break what someone else built
But now the milk is spilt
And do we cry or do we clean it up
Do we make it worse or do we love
And hold the hand of the screaming baby
Is that what it takes to save me?

2007

In 2007 I saw you on the stage
That was the year before I start to age
And grow into the skin I’ve earned
I touched the sun and, baby, I was burned
Though it’s as though I’m lit from within
And in the time before I still knew him
In my thoughts, in my words, in the page
You dance before me like it’s all the rage
And I take a note out of your book
I think forever deserves a second look

The Monumental

I’m exhausted fighting the tide
Oh what does it mean to be alive
Is it treading water or surfing the waves
Is it falling down or being brave
Coz I cannot seem to find a story
When you look at it really that doesn’t adore me
As I question every facet of a different hue
It’s who I am not what I didn’t do
Living on the brink of a well worn facade
Diving deep beyond feeling bad
And finding the Heaven life has in store
You think this is it then it’s a bit more
And I don’t draw diagrams for fun
I’m all architecture and you’re the one
As we build and we break
But we own each and every breath that we take
And every step that we walk
We must be integrity not mere talk
But the sun on the land
Or the good looking lad in a band
That caught my eye
Oh, I feel I could fly
But doubt my wings
It’s all hyperventilate and wondrous things
As he meets my stare
Holds himself like he’s really there
And I cannot ignore
The unconditional that I implore
Not to leave me
And you wouldn’t believe me
If I told you the truth
The monumental and my youth
