The Concrete Jungle

There is a boy somewhere far away
And I know that no matter what he may say
He can’t escape me
Or erase me
From his grasp
And the asp
Bit me on the neck
Of the dream I thought to wreck
And I wonder when we both might die
Me by accident and you because you want to try
To see what’s beyond the pale
And I know what is not up for sale
But I have no cash to buy
Just the lashes I use to lie
About who I am
I look away and that’s part of the plan
Because I cannot let you see
That you have found your home in me
Because I know that someday we’ll be separated
Whether by force or because we’ve been education
To believe in the divide
And I abide
Somewhere between God and Mass
Between being a good girl and getting an A in class
And it’s something growing up in an Ireland in transition
Where people still use ammunition
To fire at you
While tolerance is preached to you in the pew
And it’s not okay to be gay
Then it is (or at least that’s what they say)
And I think of Stephen Gately
And the people who cannot find a home lately
As the rows erupt
And people on the news say that we’re fucked
But I see another scene
And it resides in all that we’ve been
In all these centuries
And the millennia before they told us who we could be
If we just believed
But the dragon falls and I’m relieved
Of the burden I bear
And I watch the fabric tear
On all that I thought I knew
This land always meant more to me than you
And I know you’re somewhere in the city
And I tried it for a while but it’s a pity
But I missed the hills of Kilglass
And the soul that pours through the grass
In the fields so green
The college was a concrete jungle of all I’d never been
And I found some kind of refuge in Darragh
But my heart is like a sparrow
That sits on a lonely branch and sings
For the boys that gives air to its wings
And the girls fight over what handbag is on brand
And I just stare and watch the sand
Slipping out of our hands
And wonder why they don’t understand
That they’re gripping something that is made of leather
And won’t make them feel any better
And I know I’ve got to get out of there
Then I find Tessa and Jennie and I know that they care
As we find some kind of peace in Nutgrove Avenue
And I drove my own car down the roads of you
As I stay up til five
Exuberant in the knowledge that you’re alive
Somewhere over there on the west coast
And I don’t mean to boast
But I think my man is the best
Because he’s deeper than all the rest
And I cannot contemplate
A series of x’s and y’s that do not equate
To you and I forever
So I sail this endeavour
To it’s logical conclusion
My confession and your confusion

Love And Its Consequence

Is to be mother just to gain an experience
Nothing to do with the child
But a biological urging that has run wild
And we’re watching little ones bleed to death
On a screen but we forget
As we bring new babies to this earth
That they are capable of feeling hurt
And I am reminded of a promise I made
Before the sun put me in the shade
That I would never fall to the fallow field
That only knows how to yield
To a power greater than it
Fertile ground that only ever sit
In the seed to germinate
So he asks the girl on a date
And it may be for the masses, it isn’t for me
But I love them so much and they do not see
As the mattress bows and the bodies writhe
But they’re ashamed and so they hide
Their lovemaking under the covers
Because they should never be lovers
According to modern society
You must do it in the dark or someone will see
And you’ll go to hell (or something like that)
But I took the baseball bat
And smashed that particular window
Because I don’t believe it’s a sin, though
There is shame and there is expense
When you do it outside the present tense
And I may be tantric and I may be yogi
But I don’t walk with someone that doesn’t know me
In the depths, not surface tension
And the only way to make an extension
Is to know just who you are
But when I saw that boy I saw the star
Burning in his heart and soul
I was just eighteen years old
And he six months my junior
But still 1990 so acceptable sooner
Than I would have liked
And my courage spiked
As we sat next to each other
As though the apple had fallen into the hands of a lover
And we both took a bite
But it is alright
Fifteen and a half years later
Though there is a crater
Left by that meteor strike
I just thought you should know I like
You in that way
Though what is it that you say
You don’t got time
Well, here I have plenty, take some of mine

The Machinations Of War

I tried to scream but they stifled the cry
Now I must watch the people die
And it’s game over in the extreme
As people wake up from the dream
And wonder what it is they have been doing
The empty hands they are pursing
In the hope that it will bring them gold
But they forget to look inside their soul
To find what’s there to share
The loaves and the fish and people care
About each other
A bomb drops and another mother
Hears her child’s stifled scream
For the last time as the seam
Is burst on the dress we sew
And there may be people in the know
But they can’t see what we are
I look over at him in my car
As we drive to the sunset in my sky
But I watched the fading from view lie
In wait for every summer sun
You wake up and you are the one
Who will be the endeavoured in the replete
The woman may have washed Jesus’ feet
With her hair
But were you there
When he let her be
And for free
Forgave what held her down
Like the men about the town
Who used her for what she could
Only sell in that type of wood
And the trees holds whispers still
Feel the weight of heavy will
Signal summer in the breeze
The weight is heavy but my knees
Can finally lift their stone
And if I must I will leave home

Famous Someday

I'll be famous someday
The girl whispered to the screen
As she watched the mountains
Live their dream
And she caught every droplet
That fell from the sky as rain
Chalked it up to the cross
When she felt the pain
Of living the life she knows on the ground
You hit me hard and I didn't make a sound
And I just fell like a tree in the forest
Does all of the silence mean that you're honest
And she wrote me a letter
And I know I can do better
Than to live in the suffer
Finally admit that I do love her
In spite of the wolves that came to my door
When she blamed the earth on what I adore
Told me I was perfect, then took a swipe
I walked the floor in the dead of night
And it just awoke
We haven't spoke
In so many years
And you are the queen of tears
That set the brigade to run
And pull the thread that makes the fabric undone
And I saw you see me that time that I cried
And I put an embargo on emotions that died
When the glass was cracked
It's like the moment you can't go back
And forgiveness rules my soul
But you were the one who fractured the bowl
And I shatter with all the splintered pieces
But there is a moment when the night ceases
And the sun breaks through
And it tells me what I'm supposed to do
In the summer of life
"You will be his wife
In some way, shape or form
You will repair skies that are torn
And find your true calling here
There is something watching over you, dear"
And I grasp and I cling
But this thing is like a sling
And holds me where it hurts
So that I do not make it worse
"Let the pain go
Let the rain show
And when you're done
Then, maybe, you'll know"

The Male Archetype

His name is Fin and he is flying
He gets my mind off thoughts of dying
As everything is in decay
And I’m always wondering who made it that way
Coz if there’s a good God
Surely he wouldn’t lead with the rod
And I’m biting my nails and looking away
But I’m waiting to see what he’ll say
As the embodiment of Adiyogi
I hope he’ll like me if he knows me
And I’ve got this barrier, this cocaine wall
But it doesn’t help me to stand tall
So I show him where there’s a gap
Give him out a detailed map
So he can find his way to me
And hopefully I’ll someday see
What life is like to hold a hand
To believe in truth and love a man

At The Altar

I know you have a litany of crimes
I don't need to hear about all the times
You failed to live up to
What you think life has asked of you
I know the unconditional foundation
At the base of you
And I trust so do you
As we meet palm to palm
In this unearthly calm
It doesn't matter what we are
To each other from the star
We spin around
On what we call solid ground
You can be a friend or mate
Or take it to another state
The cord that ties binds us by the soul
And I shouldn't say you make me whole
But, darling, it really feels like that
And you wouldn't take me back
And that's fair enough
But it doesn't end my love
It just puts a reservation
On the end of your appelation
As we find ways to grow and meld
There's a fusion no iron can weld
As we grow out of the old iteration
Meet you at the inner bus station!

Central Park

Is it too long left unspoken
I say, man, I’m only joking
But I’m serious as death can be
I loved you so I set you free
But I spend every moment wishing you were here
I love you so much, my dear
And I every time I fail to catch
I leave the door on the latch
Just in case you’ll walk in
And I make up stories of me and him
To keep me warm in the grey dark
And I just walked around Central Park
Wondering what was there to give
If there’s a life I can let live
But somehow moments in the stunning
And I’m just running, running
Away from this pain that caved inside
Is there a reason why I hide
From all I thought I knew
It all revolves around you

Life Makes Love

Life makes love
With the sky, with the sea
With the atoms that make up
The constellations of me
And the design
Is its own making
It counts ever hair
And each breath I’m taking
As I find a new way
To express the expanse
And it is as though
We’re all part of a dance
Living and moving
Breathing and being
Looking through lenses
And new ways of seeing
And if there ever
Comes a midnight
Know in your heart
That you’ll be alright
Coz you made it this far
Through forests and trees
Through brambles and flowers
That blow in the breeze
And somehow, somewhere
Someone’s watching over you
If you see it in cinema
Well you’re looking for two

The Regressive Movement

Are we on the brink
Of a regressive movement
Where the skies go black
And we lose it
All to a dream
Of forever
Can we keep rowing
A hopeful endeavor
Down the river to the sea
And I’m just checking
Does He mean me?
When He says girl
Go do my will
I gotta shape up until
Destiny takes me by the hand
Says, love, it’s gonna be grand
But all I can see are these castles made of sand
And people crying out for a superman
Are we really going back
To a dark age
I spill my heart in
Ink upon the page
Say show me a way
United not divide
Where everyone has their say
And we value what’s alive
And for all the forecasts
The doommongering prophecy
I am still absorbed
By this light inside of me
That never dims, it only grows
With the heat of love it glows
Into a warm embrace
And He’s in every face
Like He lifted up His arm
And the sea was calm
So do I need to be frightened
Over the enlightened
Am I just Peter holding on to You In case he sinks
Is that my relationship to You
It could be methinks
But how do I just trust
In the words that You say
That you are with me Now
Always and everyday

This Winter

The feeling of panic

Knarls in my stomach

Maybe this is too much to be

Maybe there’s so much yet to see

But the aching roars

And the spirit soars

To become an avalanche

Of my own making

And I count every one

Of the breaths I’m taking

In case I misplace one

Amidst the snow

The winter has gone on

For so long, you know

I’ll Love You

And I will continue to love you
Through the walls of my reverie
I don’t think you have any idea
Of the world you mean to me
You are just like the sky
Or the ocean to spread out a sea
And that look in your eyes
Smacks of infinity
And I just do not care
Where you go in your life
With whom, what you do,
If you love, take a wife
I’ll always be here by the shore
And you the one I adore
It’s not even just who you are
How can the darkness know a star
We are one you see
Before there even was a sun to be
And you’ll outshine the ages with your eternal face
It’s not what can be seen but what’s under this place
And I’ll love you
Yes I’ll love you
Like I love you now
No distance and time
Separates what’s entwined
I’ll love you

Up, Over and Under

Bold and beautiful, striding and brave
Danger and dark may come but are just your slave
Hair in your eyes
Framed eyes soft and wise
And words that just dropped
Watched as your heart stopped
Lost for words with your full flare on me
There was no response as I could see
I was afraid and an ocean swirled
But warm, it enveloped and curled
This half light with you, stay
A shadow world resting in grey
I don’t understand and I’m terrified
Unknown to my eyes, this is why I hide
Apparently this yellow road is our path
Breath on my cheek, God whispers so to my heart
So, I’ll put one foot forward to meet your toes
Feel the wind blow, breathe it as it goes

Beautiful Skies

I was raised in a land with beautiful skies
And got lost in a moment of heated goodbyes
But ever the optimist to shine on the age
The sun kisses the horizon each turn of a page
So walk down to the water with me for a stroll
As we watch the fish swim and the waves as they roll
As the little grass grows up all around
Here in this silence there isn’t a sound
And you can taste years and the weight of it all
From the height of your flight to the inevitable fall
Cause all things born of earth and all things born of time
Will return to the hearth of the fire sublime

Daydreaming of You

If I could write you a poem what would I say
I love you forever like I love you today
And whatever water washes us down the line
I know in my heart we are for all time
You fill up my daydreams and I paint you unique
Releasing the things I’m longing to speak
You have a smile that crumples my soul
And a look in your eyes to show what you stole
We are so close though our bodies are far
We both share the moon and sit under a star
So when the wind rushes the hair off my face
I am wild horses and it’s you that I taste
But I come to you fragile and my head bowed low
Because you are more heaven than I know how to know
I look in your eyes and you see me right back
In know in this moment there’s nothing we lack

Alchemical

a902a1cc16784338171510884bff2525We’re alchemical
I don’t do a thing my honey babe
It isn’t a conscious choice
To give you all I have when I hear your voice
We’re alchemical

You say that I am changing you
You say I do the deed
You say that I am fixing up
All the ways you bleed
With my light
You don’t see it on the other side
The healing of my scars
The dark encroaches on my soul
And heals my broken parts

I can’t tell it’s you
I barely know it’s me
I just know that you are
Ying-yang of destiny

We’re a fusion most complete
Alchemy most profound
You think that we are separate
Together we are round
And one

Burning Strong

I’ve held it back for so long you see
From loving you and my destiny
It almost feels strange to breathe in the air
Feel the wind rustle calmness through my hair

I was born for this, I know I was
I was holding myself back because
Of all of my doubts, of all of my fears
All of this shaking has taken my years

But you knew that day, I saw it in your eyes
Knew my path and saw through my lies
You didn’t say a thing, didn’t judge me or hate
For living untruths and turning from fate

You didn’t hit me or call cynical tones
You listened to me with no throwing stones
You bowed your head and leaned in to my face
As I spoke my soul into that space

Your instinct was right, I saw it in your mind
As I begged you not to be cruel or unkind
But you knew better and I knew that you did
And still in my weakness I ran and hid

I just want to thank you for being so wise
And for knowing me better than I did at that time
I’ll never forget what you gave me for free
Trusted what you could not see

You trusted me to hold your hand
Though betrayal was my only plan
You stood beside me in my loss
You didn’t run or pay the cost

Sat side by side though I was wrong
Gave me somewhere to belong
Our secrets stories are coming true
I share it with the world and you

I feel somehow you understand
How I have changed my marching band
You were spot on when you predicted
I was a tenant soon to be evicted

I was confused and in delirium wandered
Into a forest where my wealth was squandered
But I found my way out eventually
Back to the place fitting for me

Trust

You are always home to me wherever we both go
And though we do not speak in words I know that you know
As sure as the stars blaze forth in galaxies afar
The dark interweaves our souls entwined to always what we are
And I know you have moved on and our lives are separate streams
But I meet you daily and nightly in my dreams
And everywhere’s an everglade with leaves all bursting forth
You taught me how to be myself and showed me what I’m worth
But I think in sidelines, somedays, I taught you too
Cause when you were on your own I was always there with you
In the brushing of the wind or the language that we speak
You are the destiny I didn’t know how to seek
But you found me and all in the open of the air
And in that moment looking through I saw you standing there
As you moved the earth with the weight of time and age
You are more than just a fantasy or wording on a page
And everyday’s an ocean and you’re not really gone
Cause you are inside my heart and have been for so long
So don’t cry bitter tears when you think of the past of us
We’ve always had a bond and that’s where I place my trust
